Health and Safety Policy for Pressure Washing Ruislip
Purpose: This policy sets out the health, safety and environmental arrangements for all pressure cleaning operations carried out by the company in the wider service area. It covers risk management, safe systems of work for pressure washing activities, and the control measures necessary when operating pressure washer equipment and when managing wastes and debris generated during cleaning, including rubbish collection and disposal carried out in conjunction with cleaning works. All employees, contractors and subcontractors engaged in pressure washing services in Ruislip or the surrounding service area must adhere to this policy. The organisation will ensure that safe plant, protective equipment and competent personnel are provided. The policy reflects the company commitment to minimise risks to staff, clients, the public and the environment while delivering professional pressure washer services.
Scope: This document applies to all powered cleaning operations, including hot and cold water pressure washing, soft washing and surface remediation. It includes work on pavements, car parks, building facades, gutters, and associated rubbish management activities. The policy is intended as an operational and legal reference for managers and operatives; it is not an instructional guide but a statement of required standards and responsibilities.
Responsibilities and Competence
The company director retains overall responsibility for health and safety. Managers must implement this policy day-to-day, ensuring that operatives are trained, competent and medically fit to operate pressure washers. Operatives must follow safe systems of work, report defects, and refuse unsafe work. Training records, certifications for equipment and proof of competence will be kept on file and reviewed periodically.
Risk Assessment and Method Statements: Before any job, a documented risk assessment and method statement (RAMS) must be completed that identifies hazards (high-pressure water, slip/trip, chemical detergents, manual handling, working at height, traffic and public exposure) and specifies control measures. Control measures include containment of wastewater, use of appropriate detergents within COSHH principles, and ensuring rubbish and debris are collected and removed from site in a safe manner.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): The following PPE is mandatory where applicable:
- Waterproof safety boots with steel toe and anti-slip soles
- Eye and face protection (visor or goggles)
- Chemical-resistant gloves
- High-visibility clothing and hearing protection
Equipment, Maintenance and Safe Operation
Equipment must be suitable for the task: pressure washer units, hoses, nozzles and accessories must be maintained to manufacturer standards. Pre-start checks are mandatory and all defects must be recorded and rectified. Lock-out procedures should be used when performing maintenance. Only authorised operatives may modify machine settings, and pressure settings shall be appropriate for the surface and surrounding materials to avoid damage or risk of injury.Environmental protection measures include containment of wastewater, bunding around runoff points, use of silt traps and responsible disposal of contaminated water and solid debris. Where cleaning produces rubbish or contaminated residues, these must be segregated and removed in line with waste management expectations for a rubbish removal service area, preventing entry into drains and the wider environment.
Emergencies and Incident Reporting: All accidents, near-misses and environmental incidents must be reported immediately and recorded. Emergency procedures will be established for chemical exposure, high-pressure injection injuries, slips or falls and traffic incidents. First aid kits and trained first aiders must be available on-site; arrangements for emergency services access will be part of the RAMS.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement: The organisation will monitor compliance with this policy via inspections, audits and site supervision. Performance indicators will include incident rates, equipment inspection records and waste disposal logs. Reviews will occur annually or after any significant incident. Continuous improvement will be pursued through refresher training, updates to RAMS and investment in safer equipment and environmentally conscious cleaning solutions.
Implementation and Commitment: This policy will be communicated to all employees and is available to clients and enforcement bodies on request. The company commits to providing the necessary resources to achieve the standards set out in this policy for all pressure cleaning and related rubbish management activities across its service area. Compliance with this policy is mandatory and will be enforced through supervision, training and disciplinary procedures where necessary.
